I’m nervous as hell to talk to Frank about my… whatever this is with McKenna. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to tell your best friend you’re fucking his sister. But even though McKenna and I won’t date—I just can’t do relationships—I do think it’s time he knows. I want him to understand that I’m not going to hurt his sister. It’s consensual, and when we do part ways, it’s not going to be with a broken heart.

I’m standing in front of the mirror, checking that I look okay before I go, and I look myself in the eye. I’m not going to rehearse a little speech—that would just seem ridiculous—but I do give myself the people talk. “Like you said to her, you’re both adults, and you’re allowed to do what you want. It’s not illegal or immoral.”

I don’t remind myself that it’s technically an unwritten rule between friends. I’ve already gone there, so I can’t dwell on that fact.

I’m hoping that Frank won’t dwell on it either.

I glance at the time and know I need to get a move on. I’m going to be late for our beers at the bar together, and even though I’m dreading our meeting, it will be better if I get it over and done with.

When I arrive, Frank isn’t there yet. I don’t know if I’m relieved or irritated. I really just want to get this behind me. I told McKenna I would take care of it because I think it should be my responsibility. It’s a man thing to do. But now that I’m here, I wish she would be the one to do it instead.

“Fucking coward,” I muttered to myself and order a beer.

Frank arrives at the same time my beer does.

“God, what a day,” he says, sitting on the barstool next to me. He waves his hand at the bartender, ordering a beer too, and turns to me. “Have you been here long?”

I shake my head. “I just got here. Rough day at the office?”

“You have no idea. Sometimes, I wish I could just run away and not look back.”

I grin. “I know what that feels like.”

“Don’t even start with me,” Frank groans. His beer arrives, and we clink the glasses together before each taking a sip. “You just went away for the weekend. But I guess that was work too, so it doesn’t count. But you know what they say about a change of scenery…”

I laugh and shake my head. “I don’t think it counts.” I hesitate. Now is the time to bring it up. Now is when I can tell Frank. He’s asking about the weekend, after all.

“How are things at the office?” Frank asks, changing the topic, and I kick myself for not taking the opportunity.

Coward, I remind myself again.

“How is McKenna doing?” he asks.

“Really well,” I say, and I’m being honest. “It’s like she’s made for the position. But I get the feeling her heart isn’t in it.”

Frank nods. “That a good feeling, my friend.
